Nutrition During Chemotherapy

Importance of a Healthy Diet

Make sure you are getting the proper amounts of nutrients your body needs like proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. If you are finding it too challenging to get down and keep down foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, you may be at risk for malnourishment. Whatever food you can get down, be sure to add calories by topping with butter, oil, cream, or a similarly fatty substance. If solid foods are altogether too much for your body to handle, ask your medical team about nutritional products to stay healthy during chemo. Your body also needs a lot of water. To make sure you’re staying adequately hydrated, try to drink the recommended 8-10 cups of water each day.

Power of Exercise

It is also extremely important to remain as physically active as possible. Any sort of physical activity can make a significant difference, as it helps you maintain muscle mass, keep you energized, and uphold a positive outlook. Even something as simple as a walk for 5 to 10 minutes each day can have a lasting impact on your overall health. Getting up and moving around also helps your body to continue functioning at its best. Exercise is also known to help regulate and improve mental health, which is another key component to staying healthy during treatment.

A Healthy Outlook

Maintaining good mental health while undergoing treatment can be just as challenging as maintaining your physical health but it is equally important. Without a positive outlook, it is that much harder for your body to have the energy it needs to fight this disease. A little dose of optimism can go a long way.
